hey there, independent boy!

:: 16 months ::

Daddy came home from Papua New Guinea this month. Yay! You missed him a lot and it was so cute to see you two reunited!  In a way you acted like it was just another day – like you didn’t even miss a beat with him leaving. (Although it was very clear that you missed him while he was away.) But when he got back you just proceeded to show him around, hand him toys, give him cuddles, and do all the things you always do. He missed you like crazy and seeing you two back in action brought a huge joy to all of our hearts.

We found out this month that there might be some complications with baby brother. It was hard news for mommy and daddy, especially me, and there were a few days that I was crying a lot. When I look back on those days I can also see how cranky and clingy and “difficult” you were. At the time I just chalked it up to teething, but in retrospect I really think you were picking up on where I was at emotionally and that it was effecting you more than I thought. I’ve heard that kids do that, but probably haven’t really witnessed anything like that yet. It was amazing to see how life is not just compartmentalized and it again reminds me how intelligent and perceptive you are. You truly are amazing.

This month we also went to Port Douglas for our family holiday. We had seven days there and it was fantastic. We spent tons of time on the beach, which of course you love, and we also took lots of walks, made a trip into the Daintree Rainforest, and just generally relaxed.

As usual you loved the beach - the surf, the sand, and the space. I think your favorite thing was just having both mom and dad's full attention for the entire week - dad not at work and mom not trying to get stuff done around the house. You basically had us all to yourself... probably for the last time in this way since baby brother is coming!

Your cot was set up in our room since we rented a one-bedroom apartment… and you got us up early!! I guess you don’t know yet that holidays are “supposed” to equate to sleep-ins! We’re not sure if it was teething or just that we were in the same room together. We think it was the later – you’d wake up and see us and rather than roll over and go back to sleep like you usually would you’d be up and wanting to party! Most mornings you were up at 5:30 or 6:00 instead of your usual 7:00. A few mornings it was even closer to 5:00am. Yikes, brutal!

You've also discovered how to smell... maybe my favorite thing from this month. You mostly "smell" flowers, but you've figured out you can smell other things too. Behold, the smelling face:

And another priceless example of smelling:

Your independence is growing every day. Wow. You are a little man who knows what he wants and when he wants it! You can be a little demanding and opinionated, but I’d be a little surprised if you weren’t considering you are a first-born and you are my son! Ha! It’s a good thing though. Daddy and I hope you grow to be a young man with strong convictions, confidence, and determination to please God and honor others.

You’re so active these days. You’ve now entered into the stage where you always have little bumps and bruises. I have no idea where most of them come from, but you just bang around the house running into things, tripping, etc. I think you get a little clumsier when you’re teething… and I’m pretty sure that you’ve started teething your molars again. In fact, one of them is beginning to poke through finally. It’s good to have some progress there and I hope the rest come in quickly!

You make lots of animal noises now - bird, doggy, cat, elephant (the cutest!), duck, cow, monkey, lion, rooster, and sometimes horse, frog, owl, and more - and you also have started signing mom, dad, help me, eat/hungry/food, drink/thirsty more.

In true boy fashion you are fascinated with trains, cars, motorcycles, and especially trucks and airplane and helicopters. If you can hear one you stop and make sure everyone knows about it, often mimicking the sound they make as well. You're not very much into playing with them though - you just like the real thing. The exception would be your new dump truck (which is not a ride-on toy, but you do like to sit and scoot on it) and your ride-on car. You love both of those!

You figured out how to walk on your tip toes and you're trying to learn how to jump, which is really comical since you can only pull off getting one leg off the ground at a time still.

We also went to Billabong Wildlife Sanctuary again when daddy got home from PNG. You've been when you were a baby, but it was even more fun taking you this time since you now just love animals and can interact with them on a whole new level. You loved the kangaroos especially since you could get right up to them and pet them and feed them.

Oh, and have I mentioned the imitating?? You looove copying anything and everything these days - whether it's sweeping the floor, dance moves, playing with my make-up when I'm doing my own, trying to put on belts and necklaces, bringing us a shirt to put on, "helping" in the kitchen, or even bringing me a hair-band to tie your hair up with. It's all fair game... whatever we're doing, you want in on the action!

trust me, this hairstyle was not my idea. it came at your insistence!

Well my love, you are a constant source of wonder and joy. Watching you grow and develop is truly amazing… and I wouldn’t change my role in your life for the world. I looooove being your mama.

love you always,
mom x
